As WIP Collaborative concludes, members will continue to focus on their respective practices - linked below. Tidal Shift responds to the angular geometry of the Shed’s facade and offers sculptural platforms for sitting, lounging, performing, and gathering. In contrast to the monumental towers and vast public spaces of Hudson Yards, the project supports the scale of human bodies through inclined planes and stepped surfaces that invite play, rest, and social connection. This project continues the work of WIP Collaborative, a shared feminist practice of independent designers, which creates spaces for embodied experiences in the public realm. Tidal Shift’s family of sculptural shapes supports both everyday relaxing and a range of summertime programming from the Shed, enabling multiple configurations for performances, dance parties, and events. The blue-green colors and undulating forms of the project are celebrations of movement and action on the plaza, as well as expressions of solidarity with the “Green Wave” of feminist activism that has gained global momentum with recent hard-fought victories for women’s healthcare rights in Latin America. For Soft Fits, Brooklyn’s WIP Collaborative worked with local youth to create a playful lounge-scape under the trees at the edge of The Bentway Studio Terrace facing Canoe Landing Park. Soft Fits creates a playful lounge-scape for people of all ages to gather, hang out, explore, and connect in the heart of downtown Toronto. Situated under the trees at the edge of The Bentway Studio Terrace facing Canoe Landing Park, this site-specific installation blurs the boundaries between hard and soft public space. Inspired by the cliffs, bluffs, and forest landscapes that are found in and near the city, the installation features netted frames that form inviting, shared spaces under and between the trees. The design is informed by surveys conducted with local teenagers about what softness means to them and their spatial and experiential preferences in urban contexts. While conventional playspaces &nbsp;are typically designed for small children and other public spaces feel more intended for older adults, Soft Fits offers a welcoming place for teens, whose needs are often overlooked or excluded in the public realm.&nbsp; With varied heights, curvatures, and slopes, the pieces encourage playful engagement for everyone. Hand-crafted woven textures and fringes introduce a soft materiality on the Terrace, inviting users to engage through touch.&nbsp; Soft Fits is shaped by feminist design principles and communal acts of weaving that gain strength through softness, healing, and togetherness. WIP collaborated with local artist Colleeen McCarten to weave, braid, twist, and tie reclaimed cords into the installations’ netting, encouraging local teens in particular to “create their fits” and make the public space their own through a collaborative design process. While most gallery installations are designed simply to be walked around and contemplated, All-In is an inclusive intervention that invites engagement with users of all ages. Four unique but cohesive elements come together in the gallery as a dynamic and flexible platform for various uses. Utilizing a range of geometry, materials, colors, and textures, the installation builds on WIP’s focus on creating spaces that offer choice of usage to enable diverse embodied experiences. The elements are open for interpretation by the user as worktable, seating surface, climbing structure, or otherwise. For children participating in creative workshops held in the gallery, the installation invites them to touch, sit, stand, slide, and create on the various surfaces. All-In also incorporates recycled rubber leftover from WIP’s Tidal Shift public installation at the Shed in the summer of 2022, as a visual and tactile nod to the continuity between WIP’s built works. About the exhibition:Shared Space—Collective Practices presents the work of four international collaborative design practices—WIP, FUNdaMENTAL Design Build Initiative, Colloqate Design, and Assemble—bringing people together through communal work to realize projects with broader social impact. These collectives share a multi-disciplinary approach, with teams often composed not only of architects, but collaborating with individuals with a variety of backgrounds and ranging professional expertise, including urbanists, sociologists, and community organizers. Testing the power of advocacy, the presented projects emerge in public spaces and through collaborative relationships with the communities they serve. They center on playfulness and resourcefulness, blurring the boundaries of public and private property, and emphasizing communal agency and ownership. In this way, the projects address larger social concerns and the impact of economic transformation, with a particular focus on urban densification, underserved or neglected areas, social inequity, and democratization of space with the goal of building community and collective knowledge. The design responds to the unique geometry of the existing yard and the intent for a multi-use environment to support a range of programs, from everyday dining service to casual gatherings to intimate group dinners. A combination of fixed and movable elements enable the space to transform for each use. The multitone material palette creates a cohesive and cheerful setting for patrons and community members to enjoy. As New Yorkers, we depend on public spaces as extensions of our living spaces — essential for socializing, being alone, and building communities. For people with sensory sensitivities, it is also important to provide a choice between a range of environments. After the social isolation and trauma felt by so many during the pandemic, New Yorkers need opportunities to gain comfort, healing, and connection with their neighbors. Lean on Us by WIP Collaborative will insert interactive elements onto the plaza at 300 Ashland that will offer soothing and multi-sensory experiences to facilitate a meaningful togetherness in the community. Incorporating therapeutic movement techniques1, the project will introduce illuminated structures of support for rocking, leaning, and gazing. As a programmatic layer to the installation, Lean On Us will engage the local network of storytelling and literary organizations to enhance the installation’s healing sensory experiences with a communal practice rooted in tradition, as a way to work through collective experience and trauma.Building on previous research and design work on supporting neurodiversity in public spaces, WIP proposes Lean On Us, which would transform the plaza into a soothing and interactive space that is more supportive of a range of individuals, uses, and activities. The installation will comprise of three large-scale elements inserted into the site that support body positions and movements2 often used therapeutically as endorphin releases to improve mood and release stress: Rock, Lean, and Gaze. Restorative Ground provides a range of spatial qualities - high and low stimulation, tactile materials and textures - in order to create an environment that supports a variety of sensory experiences. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, the installation utilizes that range of conditions to create distinct experiential zones: focused, active, and calm. Learning from the experiences and knowledge of neurodivergent self-advocates, the teams are applying learnings from participatory workshops and surveys with local community organizations to design prototypes for NYC streets and playgrounds. Ultimately, the Neurodiverse City aims to identify scalable ways of creating neuroinclusive environments in the public realm. Through a multi-year, phased research and co-creation process with local organizations that champion neurodivergent communities, WIP is examining existing public streets and designing prototypes to make them more sensory friendly. The learnings from these prototypes will inform new guidlines to support the greatest range of physical, emotional, and neurological differences in the public realm. Public Realm Consulting for Commercial High-Rise Development:&nbsp; Ground Floor + Street Design Hudson Yards, New York City 2021 with COOKFOX, Lendlease In a neighborhood of shiny high rise towers and empty open plazas, what is the architectural response that could enable a more human scale and community engaged experience? WIP Collaborative was asked to collaborate with Lendlease and CookFox Architects on their proposal for a mixed use development at 418 11th Ave in Hudson Yards. As design consultants focused on the public realm, WIP contributed a ground floor and adjacent street design to create a continuous interior/exterior environment serving a broader population than the building tenants and contributing a more vibrant public realm at the street level. Who is this for? A well-known critique of Hudson Yards development is that while it claims to be openly accessible to the public, it is designed to be an urban enclave for the wealthy. Dominated by commercial offices, luxury residences, and high-end restaurant and retail offerings, it is “mixed use” but serves a very narrow slice of the population and contributes little to a vibrant and diverse public realm. Analysis of the local demographic data reveals the disparity in income, household, age, and race between Hudson Yards and surrounding areas. Furthermore, Hudson Yards lacks the diversity of the general NYC population that is essential for a vibrant and equitable public realm. Knowing this, we aimed to create a continuous public environment at the ground level that would feel comfortable and welcoming for all from exterior to interior, with natural and human scale environments that are inviting and accommodating without requiring a visitor to spend money or be put on display.
